We are so close to being done with Genius Hour and am I ready? No. No I am not. This week I spent Genius Hour Wednesday starting my presentation and getting the template and all of the slides set up. This week the two projects that I did were a dog, and then a random house.
I am finding all of the reference pictures for my project on Pinterest and I chose the house because it deals with shading and forces you to pay attention to the perspective of the picture. After all, the house is supposed to look 3-dimensional. In the doc I sent to Mr.Barker I talked about drawing animals so I thought that I would start with this week I kinda just typed in “Animal pictures references” and picked the picture of the dog. While drawing the dog all I had to do was draw an Oval for his body and an Oval for his head with a box connecting to his snout, the rest was just details. Out of this week, I think the better drawing was the house because I understood how to draw it. All that is left to do on my website is just add the pictures of all my projects and finish writing the blogs, then I’ll be done. There is not a lot to update this week for my blog because I did not get to do as much as I would have liked to because I was busy with the other schoolwork I got assigned but I still got at least 2 drawings done. Because there are 2 weeks left of Genius Hour I don’t know if I will be able to complete all 12 drawings that I had hoped for because it seems like 2 drawings per week will get me only 10 in the end, but we will see in the end.

Last week I decided to switch my project to drawing, so I spent all of last week planning, and then proposing my idea to Mr.Barker. This week, I started on my first 2 drawings. I drew a Fountain and a picture of Spiderman saving someone, both of which I will include links to at the bottom of this post.
During this week of Genius Hour, I really struggled with the Spiderman drawing. If you look at it I gave up halfway through and had to just finish the rest of Spiderman's body and then give up on the guy he was saving because the proportions were all wrong and I didn’t know how to draw his face so he ended up looking all wonky and crazy. Honestly, I am very disappointed in myself for this week's drawings because even with the fountain drawing that I did the buildings look weird and too small and the proportions are not right so it looks really weird and I think that I could have done better if I had spent more time on them. Besides the proportions being hard for me the other hardest thing this week was just not losing attention because I had to sit down and draw something for like 45 minutes each, the Fountain drawing took me about an hour to do, first figuring everything out, then just drawing it, then shading, and the spiderman drawing took me about 45 minutes because I messed up halfway through and didn’t fully finish it. I have been thinking of ways for me to not lose my thoughts and attention during drawing so next week I’m going to watch a show in the background. What I did this week was just listen to music but it honestly still got boring after a while so I don’t know what I am going to do if I don’t find something to keep me focused, but I will update you next Saturday. So, I know that I have not updated my blog posts since Week 5 but there is a very big Update, which is that I am restarting my project. As you can tell this project has not been going well for me recently and it is to the point where it is out of my control, and I cannot advance any more in this project. The school has gotten very very busy, and I can’t practice during flex, I also cannot practice at home, and on Wednesdays, I only have about 10 minutes to practice but there never is Wifi so I can watch videos. The only thing that I have been updating consistently is the Website itself.
So, I am writing this on Saturday because this Wednesday I used class time to write a 600-word paper convincing Mr. Barker to let me restart my project. In this Google Doc, I included why I am changing, what my new project is, and How I plan on executing it. At the bottom of this Blog Post, I’ll link it. So, my new idea for Genius Hour is to draw. Yes, that sounds very basic but earlier in around week 4 I mentioned that the other major Idea I had for Genius Hour was to draw. I have been drawing since I was in elementary school and when I hit Highschool I lost time to draw and lost my love and motivation for art. So with this restarting, I will hopefully have rekindled my love for art. The goal is that hopefully by the end of this Project, I will have 12 new drawings, and will have improved my art skills a lot. This week I spent the majority of my time planning out the rest of Genius Hour and next week (More accurately this weekend) I will start on my first project, which is a simple fountain in the middle of a town. In the Google doc attached, I did the math and I will have to do at least 2 drawings a week to catch up to 12 at the end. New Genius Hour? I try to make it a habit to update the blog posts every Saturday, but this week got too busy so I fell behind and am writing this on Monday. There is not much to update on the project at this point because last week I did not update my website or practice my instrument. I was using my Genius Hour time to update my blogs because I had fallen behind on them.
Blog #6 will be marking the halfway point of the genius hour project, so I am reflecting on my project. I honestly regret picking the guitar, it seemed like a good idea when I first thought about it because I have always wanted to learn the guitar but now it's proving rather hard. I can’t practice at my home and I did not think about that when I was brainstorming Ideas. I think that not having the guitar for the first 3 weeks also did not help either, so in retrospect, there should have been more planning that went into the project. If I were to talk to my 6-weeks-ago self I would have told me to pick another project or to put more thought into the schedule to avoid falling behind. Over this week, I have tried to play the guitar at home but have realized that practicing at home will not be an option because of the noise, so that threw a pin in my plans for a little bit. This Wednesday was the first day that I got to practice. I talked with my Band instructor before the project even started and made sure it was okay that on Wednesdays, I came into the practice rooms and practiced the guitar. However, when me and my friend showed up to the room we had to wait around 10 minutes for his class to end to even walk in and start to set up. Besides that, I have printed out a Tab chart that shows you where to put your fingers to play different chords and that is all I did this week. I am starting to get concerned that I am falling behind because we are 33% into our Genius Hour project and this is the first time that I have picked up the guitar to start learning.
While the actual learning of the guitar is not going so great, it turns out neither is my website. Last week I talked about doing my whole home page and half of my About page, but turns out nothing saves if you don’t hit ‘Publish’ at the top of the website! But, live and learn so I am working on getting all of my websites up to speed. Luckily I saved all of the pictures I used into my computer, so it hopefully should not be that hard to update my website. |
Why Blog?By blogging my process I am showing myself and others how I have improved throughout this 12 week project by saying how I feel, if I have any setbacks, and showing my final product at the end. |
